it is late and rain falls on rain
all day long the wind called,
tumbling through the trees
unable to answer, I sit now beside
the open window imagining
that wild intensity of scent –
damp pine before the day awakens

I love this, Sarah, and those last two lines are intense. There’s just something about that scent!

Am I right in detecting a reference to Christina Rossetti’s “In The Bleak Midwinter”? One of my Christmas carols as a child. She is honoured with a feast day on the liturgical calendar of the Anglican Church on 27 April – tomorrow!

I enjoyed Rossetti in my teens, so it may be she snuck in there, although unintentionally if so.
