whether the accordion stays or goes
becomes a matter of friendship –
and of the necessity or needlessness
of tokens of attachment
a heavy load can make for a longer road,
and other favors await a verdict –
whether box or bin, either out or in,
feeling and hand both hesitate
though the heart of the gift remains whole
in spite of this inquest –
true affection demands no keepsakes,
and gathers no dust on its bellows

I am in the midst of downsizing for the big move next month. I find the days sliding by at an alarming rate, with still so much to do. It will all get done, I am certain – after much hard work and lots of letting go of the things I truly do not need. Whether the accordion makes the move with me? I’ll be sure to let you know. 🙂

I keep thinking I should downsize…so if I had to move it would be easier…hmm…maybe not yet. 🙂

Ha! “Maybe not yet” is what I told myself for a good year before the move became official. Although it’s maybe a little easier to be relentless with the purging when you’re down to the wire. 🙂

Good luck with the move Sarah. Not an easy time I imagine!

Thanks, John! Definitely a bit of a roller coaster at the moment. But it will be worth it in the end. 🙂

And what is it they say? Been there, done that. Didn’t write about it though. (Yet?)

Always “yet.” Because you just never know when the bug will bite to write about a thing. 🙂

I enjoyed this, Sarah! Have also been through the downsizing and purging (before moving here) and believe it or not it involved an accordion. A hundred year old one that came to America from Norway with my grandpa in 1914. (Ended up giving it to my son.)
Hard to part with things that have sentimental value! But the feeling of traveling lighter is so worth it. 😊 Love your poem!

Thank you! What an heirloom and to have traveled so far, too. Those things are not light weight by any means! 🙂
